Bicycling Card
This was another end-of rotation card for an inspiring and knowledgeable preceptor who I had spent a month with. It is not often I spend an entire month with one supervisor, so the progress and the feedback from this supervisor were especially impactful to me. I really wanted to show my gratitude for them, as they were honest with what I needed to work on, and I even had the opportunity to get to know them as a person.
As such, I knew that they enjoyed biking, and they had an upcoming trip to Japan. I had not been to Japan before, but I do have Japanese origami paper (I seem to use it a lot! But it is so beautiful so how can one not use it…). The choice of which paper to use was difficult because there are so many eye-catching designs, but I had decided on a brilliant blue paper to use as the main skeleton of the card, so it was a matter of choosing something that complimented that paper, and also reflected the high fashion and unique colours that my preceptor demonstrated in his outfits.
Now, the next challenge was the bike. I looked up "thank you cards with bike" and was stunned at the intricate appearance of them. I was stumped as to how to create the wheels, but I remembered these markers I had bought for Chinese New Year (we were intending to do Chinese calligraphy at that time) and tested how that looked, for a more simple appearance to the spokes of the wheel. I freehanded a silhouette of a bike and cut it out, using my pen knife to cut the middle section. It ended up looking not too bad, but I definitely would like to brainstorm more ways to make the spokes more detailed (maybe with string…).
